Ziggy is taking care of her babies around the clock! They are one week old today.Mom’s Duties:
Nursing & FeedingShe will nurse her puppies every 2-3 hours, providing colostrum (rich in antibodies) in the first days and then milk for essential nutrients.If a puppy struggles to latch, gentle guidance may be needed, but usually, the mother ensures all puppies get fed.Keeping Puppies WarmShe will cuddle around them to maintain their body temperature since newborn puppies cannot regulate heat.If she leaves for short breaks, a warm whelping box (85-90°F) is necessary.Licking for Cleanliness & DigestionThe mother licks their bellies and genitals to stimulate digestion and help them urinate and defecate.She will also clean up their waste since puppies can’t do this themselves yet.Protecting & BondingShe stays highly protective, often growling at unfamiliar people or animals near her litter.Puppies recognize her warmth, scent, and voice, which strengthens their bond.Resting & RecoveringShe will be tired and need plenty of food and water to recover from labor and support milk production.A high-calorie, high-protein diet is crucial for her health.Litter ready around 6 May 2025.

Completely Dependent on Mom.Puppies are born blind, deaf, and unable to regulate their body temperature.They rely on their mother for warmth, nutrition, and stimulation for bathroom needs.2. Sleeping and Eating All DayPuppies sleep about 90% of the time (around 22 hours a day).They nurse frequently, about every 2 hours, to get colostrum (rich in antibodies).3. Rapid GrowthTheir birth weight doubles by the end of the first week.Their tiny bodies begin developing strength for crawling.4. Noisy but HelplessThey can’t bark yet but will make small whimpering and squeaking sounds.They use their noses to find their mother and siblings.5. Care from the Mother (or You, If Needed)The mother cleans them constantly, including licking their bellies to help them pee and poop.If the mother isn’t around, humans must keep them warm, bottle-feed them puppy formula, and help them eliminate.By the end of the first week, puppies are still fragile but already growing fast! Around 10-14 days, their eyes and ears begin to open, leading to more awareness of their surroundings.
